Practicing with visual storytelling and backgrounds.

Where does your imagination go with this image? I'm curious to see how people fill in the gaps story-wise.

This is a really striking piece. Your imagery is definitely innovative, that much can be said. The details you put on the face of the...father beast...are really well done. You definitely have a talent with textures and hatched shading. If in black and white, this could pass for a masterful woodcut print.

I'd like to comment on the father for a bit. That, and the interaction between it, the daughter, and the bear, are incredibly unsettling, and I don't mean that in a bad way at all. The fact that it made me uncomfortable is a really great thing. It really brings to mind images of child abuse, and for some reason because of the shredded bear, sexual abuse. This is further reflected by the post-apocalyptic (2013 Detroit, anybody?) cityscape. For a moment, it reminded me of the Ice King and Marceline from Adventure Time, if you are familiar with that show, but of a much more sinister nature. In short, due to the fact that it's dripping with these dark undertones, your imagery and conceptual sense are fantastic.

Something techniquewise that I'd like to comment on would be the general flattness of the background. In the background behind the dead trees, I feel that the combination of the detailed textures and minimal shading makes that whole area of depth fall flat, almost feeling like those wooden facades that plays and musicals will use to simulate scenery. Maybe playing around with pushing the shadows and how the light moves around in the background, perhaps with more haziness or something of that nature, will really bring out that illusion of depth and dimensionality.
